Shamie Royston's "Windsoar" was written to depict a feeling of calmness while maintaining forward motion through life. Much like a breeze moving through the wind, the music travels between moments of peaceful stillness and powerful intensity — emotions and experiences everyone encounters at some point in life.
Written primarily in a straight eighth-note feel in 12/8, the piece occasionally shifts into 10/8, creating subtle changes in momentum and energy. It is important that the music flows naturally from one section to the next—especially through the meter changes—so the overall arc remains seamless, expressive, and groovy.
The improvised solo beginning at Letter E is offered for Alto Saxophone 1, Tenor Saxophone 1, and Trombone 1. The solo section builds into a full ensemble tutti at Letter H before melting into a quieter, more reflective passage, echoing the work's continual movement between strength and serenity.
Windsoar invites performers and listeners alike to embrace each musical moment, trusting the journey as it unfolds together.
Level: College
Instrumentation: 5 saxes/4 trumpets/4 trombones/guitar, piano, bass, drums
Solo section at Letter E offered in: alto 1, tenor 1, trombone 1
Highest note for lead trumpet: Concert Bb5 (written high C)
Highest note for lead trombone: Concert F4
