Jhoely Garay's hard-swinging piece, "Páramos," is part of a collection of compositions for jazz orchestra inspired by the sounds of nature of different natural ecosystems in Garay's native Mexico. The project's mission is to honor nature through music, creating awareness of the importance of natural areas and transmitting a message that encourages the protection and conservation of natural resources.
Páramos has a strong hard-bop identity, apparent in its melody, chord progression, and swing feel; it is reminiscent of many great tunes by hard-bop jazz legends Benny Golson and Horace Silver. This chart includes classic big band elements like a saxophone soli and shout chorus and while the solo sections are given for baritone saxophone and bass, ensembles and directors should feel free to open the solos up to any other soloists in the ensemble.
